 MARTEMPERING OIL FOR RATIVY LOW MARTEMPERING

TEMPERATURES AND A MEDIUM QUENCHING EFFECT

Mar-Temp Oil 355 is a martempering oil with low viscosity and a medium quenching speed throughout its use range.  It is a cted solvent-refined paraffinic mineral oil and is used for tempering and martempering at temperatures up to 400°F (204.4°C).  Mar-Temp Oil 355 is the fastest of Houghton International’s Mar-Temp Oils and has an extended life due to the addition of antioxidants.

APPLICATION INFORMATION

Mar-Temp Oil 355 is used for martempering of distortion-prone parts of case hardened or through hardened for the tempering of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, or certain non-metallics.

Mar-Temp Oil 355 can be used in open, closed or integral quench tanks.

     Minimum Temperature                                            80°F (26.7°C)

     Maximum Temperature                                           350°F (176.7°C)

In order to attain a long service life of Mar-Temp Oil 355, the following advice should be observed:

Because of the high use temperatures, Mar-Temp Oil 355 should have as little contact with the air as possible.  It is recommended to minimize the air-oil interface.  The oil should be agitated to maintain uniform temperature.  Stronger agitation should only be applied during actual quenching of work.  The heating ements used for warming the Mar-Temp Oil 355 should have 6.5 to a maximum of 10.0 watts/square inch, otherwise the oil would be locally overheated and could form polymers precipitating on the heater as insulating oil-coke, which would cause the heatingement to fail prematury.

Heating lements, coolers, pump or agitation components, piping, and quench tank components should not be of copper or copper alloys.  These metals act as catalysts, which accerate the oxidation and polymerization (aging) of mineral oils.  Usstainless st, nic plated or tin plated materials instead.  Existing copper coolers should be tin plated.

Upon request, used Mar-Temp Oil 355 will be checked free of charge in our Valley Forge Technical Laboratory for physical and chemical properties, as wl as for quenching effect.

Water in quenching or martempering oil is very dangerous.  Not only does it cause non-uniform or insufficient hardness of the quenched work, but also heavy foaming and increased fire hazard, because oil foam catches fire very easily.  Water in oil, which is used in integral quenching systems, can cause explosions if the foam lev reaches the furnace chamber.

Wear rubber gloves and a face shild or safety goggles.

STORAGE/HANDLING/DISPOSABILITY

No health or safety hazards exist when Mar-Temp Oil 355 is stored, used and disposed of in accordance with instructions given on the Material Safety Data Sheet for this product.
